I don’t normally do promotions in my blog, but I have just finished a book that had a profound effect on me and I wanted to share it with you. But let me explain…
How does progress really occur in our life? Many people visualize an “event” – a turning point that occurs one day and that is usually quite dramatic. And when that event happens –- BOOM! — you change forever and have this brand new habit or direction.
But… what is life really like?
In his book THE SLIGHT EDGE, author Jeff Olson illustrates that it’s actually the small disciplines, executed daily, that truly have a profound and lasting impact on your life. It’s because even the smallest choices – such as choosing the healthy sandwich instead of the double cheeseburger –when they are compounded over time, they produce massive change. Do you know that if you saved a penny, and doubled the amount every day, by the end of the month you’d have over ten million dollars?!? Now apply that to changes in your life: exercise, personal development, finances… any category can be affected positively. The smallest habits, done consistently, will reap incredible success.
This really hits home with me, because with my busy lifestyle I am always putting off actions to improve myself until “later,” when things aren’t so frantic. And – you guessed it – they never get done.
Jeff underlines that your life is always changing. It’s always getting slightly better, or getting slightly worse. It’s our daily choices that determine which way it’s changing. So small positive choices in any life category, repeated daily, compound into massive positive change in your life. Unfortunately, the reverse is also true: small errors in judgement, repeated constantly, will ultimately reap unfortunate consequences.
Simple? Of course it is! Jeff comments throughout the book that these principles are not some mysterious highly-guarded secrets; they are practical everyday truths that are actually very obvious. So why isn’t everyone doing them? Because things that are easy to do are just as easy not to do. If we go ahead and eat the cheeseburger today, it won’t kill us… today. But those choices compounded over time… well, you know. It adds up.
In a way we have a lot of factors making it difficult. Movies, television and society in general worship the big dramatic change, the “wowee” moment when the hero’s problem is suddenly and dramatically resolved. Yes, there are dramatic events in life, and sometimes these events have a profound effect on a person, good or bad. But I’m talking about the other 95% of the time, the day-in-day-out choices we make that are undramatic and seemingly insignificant. It’s when you look at it in the long run… you see that your positive choices have carved out a whole new path, and you have truly mastered your life.
So this is the “magic” that I wanted to offer up this month: the magic of truly transforming the things in your life that you want to change, and how to actually do it. It seems pretty amazing to me, and I encourage you to check it out!
