When I was six years old, a magician came to my school and performed a show. It was very fun and enjoyable, but I remember one trick very distinctly. He put a full glass of water into a small box, waved magically, opened the box – and the glass of water had vanished! I was dumbfounded. How did he do that? Maybe the glass, but the water too? Not a drop remained. Well, that was it, then. I had to find out more about this “Art of Magic.”
I had always loved reading, so I immediately grabbed every book I could find that had anything to do with magic and soaked it in. It was an eye-opening experience… and of course one that eventually transformed my life. It was great to learn tricks, and as soon as I would discover a new miracle and practice the moves, I was overwhelmed with a powerful urge to show it to someone and see their reaction. The poor victim was usually a member of my family, and I’m so grateful they had the patience (most of the time!) to witness my endless stream of “miracles.” This eventually transformed to performing full magic shows, and soon I appeared at local events, parties, and Cub Scout shows. Las Vegas, here I come!
I loved learning new tricks from those endless pages, but just as enjoyable for me was reading about the history of the conjuring art. I would travel back through time, bearing witness to the great enchanters of yesteryear: Houdini, Thurston, Kellar and countless others. Along with the history, I would pick up wisdom and behind-the-scenes knowledge. And one day I came across a book that proclaimed it would reveal (drum roll) The 3 Rules Of Magic. It proclaimed that if I just followed these three rules, I would become an incredibly talented performer, and would have limitless power to amaze tens of thousands of people, for my entire life.
WOW! I couldn’t believe it! Here it was… the ultimate Rules of Magic! The secret to make me a fantastic performer! It promised if I followed these rules I would be unstoppable. My hands quivered with excitement as I slowly turned the page to reveal this golden wisdom, this life-changing knowledge.
So I turned the page and saw before me The 3 Rules Of Magic:
Okay, not exactly what I was expecting. In fact, not exactly what I wanted to hear. You mean I have to work harder?!? I was looking for some golden nugget that would instantly transform me into a superstar. Not this! But wouldn’t you know it, those three rules of magic have turned out to be some of the strongest knowledge I have acquired.
Last Saturday I did a big illusion show here in California. It was a full-out performance with an assistant, and during the show she magically appeared, floated, and was cut into three pieces. It was a sold-out night – hundreds of people, and great audience response. Very gratifying. Afterwards I was in the lobby signing autographs, and near the back of the line was a young man in his early teens. When it was finally his turn, he quietly told me that he aspired to be a full-time magician one day, and wanted to ask my advice; what is the best way to go about it? I replied, “Advice? I can do better than that. I can tell you the true secret to becoming a full-time professional. If you adopt these guidelines, you will become very talented and proficient.”
He excitedly leaned forward, ready to hear this golden wisdom that would transform him into a world-class magic performer.
“Okay kid, here it is. These are The Three Rules Of Magic…”
